Big Brothers Competition Team at the IBJJF 2013 New York Open

On April 20th, members of the Big Brothers Competition Team, including Dave Trader, Michelle Welti, and Khoger Dosky, traveled to New York City to compete in the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation New York International Open.

Dave Trader decisively beat his toughest opponent – the scale – and brought home gold in the black belt senior 2 featherweight division, uncontested.  In the open weight division, Dave defeated the middleweight champion by a score of 8-0 to advance into the finals where he met 2012 Masters & Seniors World Medium-Heavyweight champion and current Senior 2 Black belt #1 Ranked competitor Carlos Terrinha of Gracie Barra.  After a very close match, in which neither competitor was able to score, Dave lost on advantages and had to settle for the open class silver medal.

Michelle Welti tore through the blue belt female middleweight division, submitting her first opponent and putting a very tough finals opponent in deep submissions for nearly the entire match to take home the gold!  Michelle continued her run into the female blue belt open weight division winning her first two matches by large point margins to move her into the finals.  Unfortunately, Michelle was unsuccessful in the final and had to settle for open class silver.

Khoger Dosky competing in his first IBJJF event, fought in the blue belt middleweight division.  Khoger fought hard – against one of the eventual division finalists – losing his first match on points.  Despite losing early, Khoger gained valuable experience.  Look for him to return to his winning ways in his next competition.

Congratulations to all the other competitors from the Big Brothers Competition Team:

Noah Booth (Leo Dalla BJJ): Silver Medalist/Black Belt Senior 1 Feather weight

Travis Mcilvenna (Leo Dalla BJJ): Gold Medalist/Brown Belt Senior 2 Middle weight – Bronze Medalist/Brown Belt Senior 2 Open weight

Victor Ciocoiu (Leo Dalla BJJ): Silver Medalist/Brown Belt Senior 1 Light Feather weight – Bronze Medalist/Brown Belt Senior 1 Open weight

Vu Tran (Leo Dalla BJJ): Silver Medalist/Purple Belt Masters Light weight

Rob Carpenter (Stafford BJJ): Bronze Medalist/Blue Belt Senior 3 Middle weight – Bronze Medalist/Blue Belt Senior 3 Open weight

Also a job well done to Anthony Garavalia (Stafford BJJ) and Ryan Hagerty (Stafford BJJ) – both fought hard and gained valuable tournament experience despite losing prior to the medal rounds.

Look for continued strong performances from these all of these Big Brothers competitors in the future.
