Michelle Welti of Team Dave Trader Jiu-Jitsu traveled to Wayne, New Jersey to compete in Grapplers Quest’s seventh Beast of the East submission grappling/Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament this past weekend. This year’s Beast of the East was held over two days, March 24th and 25th, the first day consisting of all no-gi/submission grappling, and the second day all Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Saturday Michelle fought no-gi, placing second in the women’s advanced absolute division. Michelle had a first round bye, won her second match 20-0, but lost ended up losing in the finals. “It was a tough match. I definitely felt tired from trying to cut weight, but I think with some hard training I will be able to win next time” Michelle said after her loss. Michelle also placed second in her weight class.
Sunday Michelle competed in two blue belt divisions. She placed first in her weight class, beating the girl that defeated her the previous day. “I felt much more comfortable fighting in the gi, and was happy that I got to fight Amanda again” said Michelle. Michelle also took first place in the absolute division, winning her first match by armbar and her second match by ref’s decision.
Michelle attempted to cut down a weight class for this tournament but missed it by just 2 pounds. For more info on her weight cutting experience and personal thoughts on this competition check out her blog at www.michellewelti.blogspot.com.
