The 2014 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships was hosted by the IBJJF at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California from May 29th to June 1st.
Dave Trader Jiu-Jitsu member, Michelle Welti, competed in the women’s blue belt medium heavy weight division on May 30th. Michelle had a first round bye due to her high ranking with the IBJJF. In the second round, Michelle submitted her opponent via triangle choke in just 1:05! Unfortunately Michelle was defeated in the semi-finals and once again took home Bronze at the 2014 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships.
Michelle’s 3rd place finish qualified her for the open division. The open division is for competitors from any weight class, making a victory here much more prestigious. Michelle won her first match with an armbar from guard in just 25 seconds! Her second match did not go her way and she was defeated 5-0 by the eventual open class winner, Tara White.
When asked about her performance, Michelle said, “My goal, of course, was to win gold so when I lost in the semi-finals I was devastated. However, placing in the World’s is a great achievement, and I am proud of my performance.” Michelle has high hopes and expectations for next year!
