Michelle Welti of Team Dave Trader Jiu-Jitsu traveled to New York City this past weekend to compete in the Abu Dhabi World Pro Trials. The trials are held each year in different cities all around the world, with the winners taking home an all expense paid trip to Abu Dhabi to compete in the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championships. Prizes go to the winner of each weight class at Brown/Black Belt, and the winner of the Absolute (open weight class) at Purple, Blue, and White Belt.
The women were grouped into two weight classes (under 140lbs & over 140lbs). Michelle fought in the over140lbs division in a tough match again Marcelo Garcia competitor Hanna Fisher. Michelle was able to keep Hanna at bay but wasn’t able to score and eventually lost the match by two advantage points. Hanna went on to place second in the weight class and first in the Absolute.
Hungry for a come-back and for the prize, Michelle registered for the Absolute weight class. Michelle won her first match by 1 advantage point, and her second match 7-0. She was through to the semi-finals! The third match was back and forth sweeping, and with less than one minute left in the match Michelle shot a triangle. Unable to finish she tried to use it to sweep but couldn’t beat the clock. Michelle lost in the semi-finals 4 – 2. Overall Michelle placed third in the Absolute weight class.
