Several members of Team Dave Trader competed at US Grappling‘s Submission Only tournament at the Dulles Sportsplex in Sterling, Virginia on Saturday, March 19th. For those of you unfamiliar with the format, submission only tournaments eliminate points and time limits from jiu-jitsu and no-gi grappling matches. This means competitors fight until one opponent is able to secure a joint lock or choke and force a submission from their opponent. Without a point scoring system or time limit, matches have been known to last for over two hours, although this is rare.
Michelle Welti won her no-gi advanced division, locking in a rear naked choke at the 12 minute mark to take the title. Michelle dominated her opponent in the Women’s Blue Belt division, putting her to the mat with a beautiful tai otoshi to osoto gari combination and quickly securing a bread cutter choke for the finish.
Josh “Mammoth” Wehrmann dominated his White Belt weight division as well as the White Belt open class division, hitting his trademark hiza guruma on nearly every opponent and locking in kimuras and bread cutters to quickly submit each of his opponents.
Andrew “Youtube” Babeu, despite failing to bring home a gold medal, had the performance of the tournament. Starting his day with a 55 minute war in which he out willed his opponent to the victory, Andrew followed up with several matches – each over 25 minutes long. Showing incredible heart and fighting severe cramping, Andrew battled his opponents through over 3 hours of competitive grappling. Andrew finished the day with 2 silver medals, 2 bronze medals, as wells as the profound respect and admiration of everyone who was at the event.
Arturo Ayala dominated a very tough opponent for 12 minutes, moving from one dominant position to another while attacking submissions, but had to bow out of the tournament after injuring his ribs. Look for Arturo to come back with a gold medal performance next time out.
