Manassas Mixed Martial Arts instructor, Michelle Welti, travels to New York, NY today to compete in the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation’s (IBJJF) New York Summer Open.
Michelle went uncontested in her weight division, automatically qualifying her for the absolute division. The absolute, or open, division is comprised on medalists from each weight class competing against one another for the ultimate title of Absolute Champion. This title holds more prestige than that of your individual weight class.
In the Spring of this year, Michelle placed second in the Absolute division at the New York Open, and was looking to return from the Summer Open with the gold. Michelle finished her quarterfinals match in less than 15 seconds with an armbar, advancing her into the semifinals. In her next match Michelle’s opponent pulled guard; Michelle passed and took the mount securing her place in the finals with a 7-0 win over her opponent. Once again, Michelle outscored her opponent in the finals, and without a point scored on her all day, she took home the gold!
Other affiliate competitors included Victor Ciocoiu, Levi Sadr, Kevin Matthews, and Angelo Trivisonno. Victor took gold in the Brown Belt Senior 1 light feather weight division and bronze in the Absolute. Levi took bronze in both the Brown Belt Masters medium heavy weight and absolute divisions. Kevin was uncontested in both the Purple Belt Senior 3 middle weight and open divisions, bringing home double gold. Angelo fought a close match with no points on the board, his opponent beating him by just one advantage.
